Psalm 63 talks about how the writer is overwhelmed by Who the Lord-God is. And not just Who He is in general, but then what his response is after standing in awe of God.

Vs. 1) “O God, You are my God”- a personalized approach. This is something I would like to draw your attention to…is God your God? Have you crowned Him as Lord of your life? Do you truly know the truths of His Word and do you truly stand on His promises?

The first verse goes on to express the writer’s desire to know more about the Lord, to know Him better- “Seeking, thirsting, longing for Him; like in a dry and thirsty land.” May this be us! May we long for Christ. May we realize how dry and empty everything around us is – this world cannot satisfy, only God can do that.

In John 4:13-14, Jesus spoke to a woman at the well and told her that “whoever drinks of this water, will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” (NKJV)

Dig into His Word to know His will and to get to know Him.

He then goes on to expound on some of the Lord’s characteristics and Who He has proven Himself to be: loving/kind (vs. 3), our Helper (vs. 7), our Sustainer (vs. 8), the Judge (vs. 9-10), Faithful (vs. 11). (NKJV)

Jeremiah 31:3 says, “The Lord has appeared of old to me saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, with loving-kindness I have drawn you.” (NKJV)

Vs. 4b says, “…you will again be adorned with your tambourines, and you shall go forth in the dances of those who rejoice.” (NKJV)

God remains faithful; God remains good even when we forsake Him and turn away from Him. He will yet again prove His grace and give us reason to rejoice and to praise, because He is still good. He is still kind and loving. This ought to excite and overwhelm you; honestly, I can say that it humbles me. Especially after I have just had a few days where I know I am SO sinful, where I know how many times I have failed the Lord, and yet He is gracious enough to tell me that He has grace and goodness towards me…wow.

As the Psalmist, here in chapter 63, says that the Lord has been His help (vs. 7), we can know that we serve the same Lord. I am certain you can also testify of many times He personally revealed that to you in your life. How he just came through for you and helped you out whether it was in a scary situation, trail, or even a big heartache. He is our Helper!

Psalm 72:12 “For He will deliver the needy when he cries, the poor also, and him who has no helper.” (NKJV)

John 14:16-17a says, and this is Jesus speaking, “…and I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever- the Spirit of truth.” (NKJV)

We have the Holy Spirit given to us by God the Father – what a privilege! Don’t lose the wonder of the gift we have to be called God’s children and to be able to talk to Him any time!

In Psalm 55:22 the writer says: “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.” (NKJV)

How often do we actually take the Lord at His word? Do we truly commit our cares to Him? Do we truly lay them at His feet and trust Him to take care of it? May this be a challenge to both you and me! May we do that during this week.

So in essence this Psalm shows Who the Lord is and how we, as mere human beings, must react: seek Him (vs. 1), praise Him (vs. 3), bless Him (vs. 4), rejoice in Him and His works (vs. 7b) and follow Him (vs. 8). (NKJV)

May we be as the Psalmist says in verse 5: “…my soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness.” Referring to being ‘filled to the brim’, almost like how you feel after being starved and then having a big hearty meal- full. Content. Satisfied. May you be just that; content in Who the Lord is and in what He has given you.
